Colonia 2024
WHAT IS A COLONIA?
The development of Texas colonias dates back to the 1950s. Using agriculturally worthless land, developers created unincorporated subdivisions with little or no infrastructure. Housing is primarily constructed by residents using discarded wood, cardboard or other materials - usually lacking electricity, plumbing and other basic amenities.
WHO IS BUCKNER?
For more than 135 years, Buckner International (www.buckner.org) has been transforming lives through hands-on ministry. In 2002, Buckner International began to provide innovative programming to support vulnerable children and families living in poverty in the colonias along the Texas/Mexico border (www.buckner.org/rio-grande-valley/).
2024 IS OUR ELEVENTH YEAR
It is our eleventh year working with Buckner International in the Penitas Colonia. Each year, beginning in 2011, over 230 Woodlawn regulars have joined one of the teams to use their gifts and abilities to impact the Penitas Colonia. This is your year to be a part of the Colonia Work Project!
WHO CAN GO?
This summer’s mission project, June 8-14, is open to adults, families with children, college-age adults, and high school students who have completed the 9th grade. Children/Students younger than 9th grade will serve on the Humanitarian Aid Team with one of their parents.

The purpose of Lead Camp is to inspire and equip Christian students. Students will have the opportunity to meet other students from across Texas while being in in-depth leadership training through four worship experiences, five small group sessions, and experiential challenge courses. It is our desire to develop in each student strong and lasting leadership skills that will enable them to lead with intentionality and purpose in their church, school community, and around the world for Jesus Christ. The FINAL Great Flamingo Explosion
The FINAL Great Flamingo Explosion
WHEN March 8-March 16 (Spring Break)
WHAT IS IT? People pay to put flamingos in other peoples’ yards! Those receiving the flamingos pay to get them out of their yard! They pay more to send them to a specific person! We even have people that pay for flamingo insurance, so they won’t get flamingoed! The best thing about it? Students and their families who work the fundraiser earn money that goes into their family account to be used on future camps, mission trips, retreats, etc! The more members of the family that work the fundraiser, the more money the family earns.
HOW IT WORKS
Each night, beginning on the Friday before Spring Break, the flamingo flocks will be placed in bunches in the front yard of families who have been “flamingoed.” In addition to the birds, a sign will be placed in the yard and a door hanger on the front door informing the homeowner that he/she has been “flamingoed” with instructions on having the birds removed. Each homeowner will have the opportunity to make a donation to the Woodlawn Fundraising Fund in order to have the birds removed the following evening.
Suggested Donation Amounts
$25 to send flamingos to a specific homeowner
$20 to have flamingos removed from your yard
$30 to have the flamingoes removed from you yard and have control over where they go next
$45 to have flamingos placed in the yard of someone who has already been flamingoed
$60 to have the flamingos placed in the yard of one of our ministry team (Russell Allen, Lane Northcut, David Wall, Robert Baldwin, and Stephanie Shouse)
Flamingo Insurance
Of course, not everyone appreciates the stylish additions of flamingos to their yard. If that’s you, you may purchase “flamingo insurance” (the flamingos will not visit your yard during the fundraiser). Flamingo insurance must be purchased at least 1 week before the fundraiser starts. Suggested donation is $35.
Respect For Private Property
While we want to have fun and encourage some good-natured ribbing and competition between Woodlawn regulars, families and friends; we will respect the rights of homeowners to control what happens on their property. We will not place flamingos in the yard of anyone who asks us to refrain from doing so ahead of time, whether or not they have purchased “flamingo insurance.” You may call 512-442-7858 or 512-497-5255 to have you name put on the “do not flamingo” list.
In addition, if we have placed flamingos in the yard of someone who does not want them, we will promptly remove them upon request at no charge.
Who can you “flamingo?” Anyone! It’s a great way to have fun and at the same time let others know about Woodlawn! In addition to other Woodlawn regulars, flamingo our neighbors, co-workers and friends (who have a sense of humor)!
How to send flamingos?
Click the button below to purchase insurance or place you flamingo order.
Print the form PDF below and turn in the form and payment to the church office, Stephanie Shouse or the flamingo booth in Connection Center on Sundays.
