Colonia Missions

WHAT IS A COLONIA?

The development of Texas colonias dates back to the 1950s.  Using agriculturally worthless land, developers created unincorporated subdivisions with little or no infrastructure.  Housing is primarily constructed by residents using discarded wood, cardboard or other materials - usually lacking electricity, plumbing and other basic amenities.

WHAT IS BUCKNER?

For more than 135 years, Buckner International (www.buckner.orghas been transforming lives through hands-on ministry.  In 2002, Buckner International began to provide innovative programming to support vulnerable children and families living in poverty in the colonias along the Texas/Mexico border (www.buckner.org/our-work/rio-grande-valley/).
